What it means
The transmission computer has detected a problem with shift solenoid C. Shift solenoids direct fluid pressure inside the transmission to change gears.
Is it safe to drive?
Drive gently. The transmission may stay in one gear (limp mode), which limits speed and acceleration.
Symptoms
- Stuck in one gear
- Harsh or erratic shifts
- Delayed engagement
- Transmission warning light
Probable causes
Most likely first
- 1Failed shift solenoid
- 2Low or dirty transmission fluid
- 3Damaged wiring or internal harness connector
- 4Valve body fault
How to diagnose it
Work through these in order before buying parts
- 1Record the code and its freeze frame data (speed, load, temperature when it set), then clear it and see if it comes back.
- 2Check the transmission fluid level and condition first (follow the maker's procedure; many need the engine running and the fluid hot). Dark, burnt-smelling fluid or metal debris points to internal wear.
- 3Measure solenoid resistance at the transmission connector.
- 4Command the solenoid with a bidirectional scan tool and listen or feel for it clicking.
- 5Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for your make and model; some codes have known factory fixes.
Common fixes
- Replace the shift solenoid
- Repair the wiring or internal harness
- Service the fluid and filter
This information is general guidance for all makes. Exact causes, specifications and procedures vary by vehicle, so confirm with your service manual or a qualified mechanic before replacing parts.
