Idle Control System RPM Higher Than Expected

Moderate· Fix soonDIY friendlyPowertrainGeneric, all makes

What it means

The engine is idling higher than the ECU wants. Usually extra air is getting in from a vacuum leak, or the throttle is not closing fully.

Is it safe to drive?

Drivable. A high idle can make automatic cars creep forward more strongly, so keep a firm foot on the brake.

Symptoms

  • High idle speed
  • Car pushes forward at stops
  • Harsh engagement into gear

Probable causes

Most likely first

  1. 1Vacuum leak
  2. 2Dirty throttle body with a sticking plate
  3. 3Faulty IAC valve stuck open
  4. 4PCV valve stuck open
  5. 5Throttle needs relearning after cleaning or battery disconnect

How to diagnose it

Work through these in order before buying parts

  1. 1Record the code and its freeze frame data (speed, load, temperature when it set), then clear it and see if it comes back.
  2. 2Listen and smoke-test for vacuum leaks.
  3. 3Clean the throttle body and perform an idle relearn.
  4. 4Check the PCV valve.
  5. 5Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for your make and model; some codes have known factory fixes.

Common fixes

  • Repair vacuum leaks
  • Clean the throttle body
  • Replace the IAC or PCV valve
  • Perform an idle relearn
