Engine Overspeed Condition
Moderate· Fix soonDIY friendlyPowertrainGeneric, all makes
What it means
The engine has gone above its maximum safe RPM. This is usually from a missed shift on a manual gearbox, or the wheels spinning on a slippery surface.
Is it safe to drive?
Usually safe if it was a one-off. If the engine revs on its own, have it checked immediately.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- May have no symptoms after the event
Probable causes
Most likely first
- 1Downshifting into too low a gear (manual)
- 2Wheel spin
- 3Transmission slipping
- 4Faulty crankshaft sensor giving false RPM
How to diagnose it
Work through these in order before buying parts
- 1Record the code and its freeze frame data (speed, load, temperature when it set), then clear it and see if it comes back.
- 2Ask how the car was being driven when the code set.
- 3If it returns without overspeed events, check the crank sensor signal.
- 4Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for your make and model; some codes have known factory fixes.
Common fixes
- Clear the code if it was a driving event
- Repair transmission slipping
- Replace the crankshaft sensor if faulty
