Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance

Moderate· Fix soonDIY friendlyPowertrainGeneric, all makes

What it means

The mass air flow (MAF) sensor is sending a signal that is electrically valid but does not make sense compared with other sensors. The mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures how much air is entering the engine so the ECU can add the right amount of fuel. This usually points to a sensor that is reading wrong, or to a real mechanical problem it is reporting correctly, rather than a broken wire.

Is it safe to drive?

Usually safe to drive short distances, but the engine may run rough, stall or use more fuel. Fix soon to avoid catalytic converter damage from running too rich or lean.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hesitation or stumbling on acceleration
  • Rough or unstable idle
  • Stalling just after starting
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Black smoke (rich) or lean surging

Probable causes

Most likely first

  1. 1Dirty MAF sensing element (oil from aftermarket air filters is a common cause)
  2. 2Air leak after the MAF sensor (cracked intake boot, loose clamp, vacuum leak)
  3. 3Clogged or collapsed air filter
  4. 4Restricted exhaust or catalytic converter
  5. 5Failing sensor giving an inaccurate reading
  6. 6Poor connection at the sensor connector

How to diagnose it

Work through these in order before buying parts

  1. 1Record the code and its freeze frame data (speed, load, temperature when it set), then clear it and see if it comes back.
  2. 2Inspect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor connector and wiring (in the intake tube between the air filter box and the throttle body). Look for corrosion, bent or pushed-back pins, oil contamination and chafed insulation.
  3. 3Watch the mass air flow (MAF) sensor reading on live data. At warm idle most engines read roughly 2–7 g/s (about 1 g/s per litre of engine size). The reading should rise smoothly and quickly when you rev the engine.
  4. 4Compare the mass air flow (MAF) sensor reading against related sensors and the real-world condition. If they disagree, find out which one is telling the truth before buying parts.
  5. 5If the wiring checks out, test the sensor itself against the specification in a service manual.
  6. 6Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for your make and model; some codes have known factory fixes.

Common fixes

  • Clean the MAF element with dedicated MAF cleaner spray (never touch the wire or film) and recheck before replacing it
  • Fix the underlying problem the sensor is reporting, if real
  • Replace the mass air flow (MAF) sensor if it reads wrong against a known-good reference
