Driver Frontal Stage 2 Deployment Control

High· Fix promptlyProfessionalBodyGeneric, all makes

What it means

The airbag control module has detected a fault in the deployment circuit for the driver front airbag (stage 2). Until it is fixed, that airbag may not deploy in a crash.

Is it safe to drive?

The car drives normally, but the airbag system may not protect you in a crash. Get it repaired promptly. Never probe airbag wiring yourself; airbags can deploy and cause injury.

Symptoms

  • Airbag (SRS) warning light on

Probable causes

Most likely first

  1. 1Worn clockspring (spiral cable) behind the steering wheel, the most common cause
  2. 2Damaged wiring or connector
  3. 3Failed airbag module
  4. 4Disturbed connectors after seat or dash work

How to diagnose it

Work through these in order before buying parts

  1. 1Have a qualified technician read the SRS module codes and resistance values with a capable scan tool.
  2. 2Disconnect the battery and wait the time stated by the maker before touching any airbag parts.
  3. 3Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for your make and model; some codes have known factory fixes.

Common fixes

  • Replace the clockspring
  • Repair the connector or wiring
  • Replace the airbag module
  • Clear the SRS code with a capable scan tool

This information is general guidance for all makes. Exact causes, specifications and procedures vary by vehicle, so confirm with your service manual or a qualified mechanic before replacing parts.
